Trompe L’oeil Garments

Trompe L’oeil illusionism works best in paintings when the subject is as flat as possible, such as marble and wood grain patterns. More spatial objects should also be flat for the best illusion possible. Paper, ribbons, flat tools are examples.

Dimensional objects are subject to linear perspective, which indicates the location of the viewer. When the viewer is not in the correct location, it becomes obvious that the image is painted and not the actual objects, destroying the illusion.

In an investigation into painting illusions of deeper space, I used fabrics and garments to describe more space. I used them because they do not exhibit obvious linear perspective.

I painted hanging garments on minimal backdrops which were designed to work with the garment decoratively and descriptively.
